Miami Open: Roger Federer faces in-form Daniil Medvedev for quarter-final berth

Federer hit 14 aces against Krajinovic and won 74% of first-serve points.

Federer was stunned by Thanasi Kokkinakis in his opening match of the Miami Open a year ago and another early exit was beckoning when he dropped the first set on Saturday.

Switzerland's Roger Federer swept through his third-round match against Filip Krajinovic 7-5, 6-3 on Monday to advance to the round of 16 at the Miami Open in Miami Gardens, Fla.

In a late upset, wild card David Ferrer, who is set to retire this year, defeated 2018 runner-up and second seed Alexander Zverev 2-6 7-5 6-3. But the Swiss star's class and experience eventually shone through as he booked a round of 32 match with Serbian Filip Krajinovic who surprised three-time Grand Slam victor Stan Wawrinka 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) earlier in the afternoon. Serving in the final game, he smacked aces on the first three points, and then hit another ace that skipped off the line to seal the victory - or so it was ruled. And this year, I didn't want to have three months off and I was excited to play the clay season again.

Keeping the pressure on, however, was a different matter as Federer broke straight back before pocketing the opening set.

It was Anderson's first tournament appearance since the Australian Open in January and he said he was happy with the way his elbow felt.

"I am very relieved and happy to make it through".

"I knew it was going to be a tough match", said Osaka.

Federer has admitted that he will be up for a real test in the next round against an in-form Daniil Medvedev.

Czech Kvitova, whose knife-wielding attacker in 2016 - 33-year-old Radim Zondra - was sentenced to eight years in prison yesterday, will play Australian Ashleigh Barty today after beating France's Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-3.

Eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas easily beat Mackenzie McDonald 7-6 (4) 6-1.

Andreescu was 1-6 0-2 down before a shoulder injury ruined her chances of another run to the finals.
