Space Jam 2, starring LeBron James, finally has a release date!

Rumours of the sequel emerged when James' company SpringHill Entertainment signed a deal with Warner Bros. covering projects in TV, film and original digital content. The sequel isn't set to release until July 16, 2021. Beyond James' role, it's not yet clear who will star in the movie. Obviously I loved Space Jam, and that soundtrack is still a classic.

We might have our first look at Lebron James in Space Jam 2.

SpringHill released a promotional photo on social media for "Space Jam 2" on Thursday night along with the premiere date.

The seeds were sewn back in 2013 when Lebron tweeted that he would be interested in starring in Space Jam 2. The latter likely won't end up making its planned premiere, as all Marvel movies now in development at 20th Century Fox are on hold until the merger between Fox and The Walt Disney Company goes through, at which point Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will take over the franchise and do with the X-Men movies (and all the characters Disney is buying from Fox) what he pleases. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is producing this one with Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) directing. Bugs was pretty much a given, but the presence of Lola, who made her first appearance in the 1996 film, is extremely exciting for fans.

The original Space Jam was directed by Joe Pytka and starred Michael Jordan in a partially animated caper that found him teaming up with Bugs Bunny and friends to win a basketball game against talent-stealing aliens. But I'm not going to pretend like Space Jam is a great movie, or even a good one.
