Mitch McConnell to Force Green New Deal Vote to 'Rattle' Democrats

McConnell announced during a press conference Tuesday afternoon that he would send the so-called Green New Deal measure to the Senate floor for a vote "to see how they feel about the Green New Deal" - a tactic he's used in recent years to put vulnerable opponents on the record supporting or opposing controversial policies.

The legislation, a sweeping package of climate-change measures unveiled by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, has drawn a tepid response from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who didn't explicitly throw her support behind the ideas. What is left afterward is a bunch of conservatives anRepublicanan lawmakers looking like they're trying as hard as they can to oppose climate change initiatives at all cost, something AOC knows most Americans support in one respect or another.

The Green New Deal has already been met with controversy within the Democratic Party.

"I've noted with great interest the Green New Deal", McConnell told reporters at the Capitol Tuesday afternoon. As Vox's Matthew Yglesias points out, "They ran this exact play on the Sanders Medicare for All bill" in the Senate in 2017, when Montana Republican Steve Daines pasted a Democratic single-payer insurance plan onto one of the failed Obamacare repeal attempts.

The resolution submitted to the House and Senate makes no mention of cows or air travel. However, it's received far less support and more pause from moderate Democrats while receiving criticism from Republicans.

Trent, the spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez, predicted the Green New Deal gambit would backfire on Republicans.

The Senate Majority Leader won't be unprepared for such a contest, however. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), environmentalists and progressive members of Congress argued that rather than revealing deep rifts in the Democratic Party, an up-or-down vote will spotlight the GOP's total opposition to a widely popular policy that represents the best hope of adequately confronting the climate crisis.

At a rally Monday night in El Paso, Trump mocked the Green New Deal, saying, "It sounds like a high school term paper that got a low mark". "The Green New Deal resolution has struck a powerful chord in this country, and Republicans, climate deniers, and the fossil fuel industry are going to end up on the wrong side of history", he said. Ocasio-Cortez has since disavowed the FAQ, which was posted on her website, and suggested her political enemies disseminated the document to sabotage the proposal. The ambitious proposal has been spearheaded by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Some Republicans even accused Democrats of proposing to do away with treats like ice cream by seeking to address bovine flatulence, which last week's memo highlights as a significant source of greenhouse gases. "American favorites like cheeseburgers and milkshake will become a thing of the past", said Sen.
