Texas man dies after exploding vape pen severs carotid artery: coroner

A man who was using a vape pen for the first time died after it exploded in his face and severed his carotid artery.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said the exploding device severed his left internal carotid artery.

Alice Brown, the victim's grandmother and guardian, said her grandson left their home on January 27 to visit Smoke and Vape DZ, a local vaping supply store.

"It just hurts so bad", Brown's grandmother, Alice, told the newspaper.

"It just all seems so unreal", she told the news outlet.

"That three-piece thing went into his throat and stayed there, and that's what (physicians) should have taken out as soon as they got to the hospital, and they made a decision to wait until Monday or Tuesday", Alice Brown said.

The explosion, which occurred two days prior to his death, happened in the parking lot of a vape shop in Fort Worth.

Brown is the second person in the US known to have died due to an exploding e-cigarette. Shop managers told CBS DFW that Brown did not purchase anything, but was seeking help on how to use a Mechanical Mod vape pen.

Authorities did not identify what brand of vape pen Brown had been using, but his grandmother told the Star-Telegram that she was working with an investigator and had recovered a piece to aid with the case.

Brown's grandmother said she's not interested in suing because it won't bring her grandson back. None of those injuries resulted in death, according to the report. He was also burned on about 80 per cent of his body.

Researchers found that there were an estimated 2,035 e-cigarette explosions and burn injuries in hospital emergency rooms from 2015 to 2017.

The researchers said regulation and surveillance of e-cigarette devices "is urgently needed".
