Alzheimer's is caused from both genetic and environmental risk factors, such as ageing, which combine to result in epigenetic changes, leading to gene expression changes, but little is known about how that occurs. Dominy began a side project looking for P. gingivalis in brain tissue from deceased patients with Alzheimer's, and-after his work found hints-started the company with entrepreneur Casey Lynch, who had studied Alzheimer's as a graduate student.

Dr David Reynolds, chief scientific officer at charity Alzheimer's Research UK, pointed out that Alzheimer's was likely to have multiple causes, one of which may be gum disease bacteria.

It's possible that news of the possible link will lead to people spending more time on their dental health than they now do, though: One study found less than one third of Americans floss daily.

But a U.S. study has proved for the first time that the bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major cause of gum disease, can move from the mouth to the brain in mice, which suffered damage to cells in the hippocampus - the brain region important for memory.

Experts have long warned about the negative effects of sleep deprivation, and new research suggests that people with Alzheimer's disease may be particularly affected.

The researchers hope this will provide the basis for developing a new therapy that could one day treat humans in a similar way.

However, "we now have strong evidence connecting P. gingivalis and Alzheimer's pathogenesis, but more research needs to be done before P. gingivalis is explicitly implicated in the causation or morbidity of Alzheimer's disease".

According to a new study, bleeding gums and sensitive teeth are not only painful and annoying, but they are also having a never-before-seen connection with the Alzheimer's Disease. Results showed mouse ISF tau was increased by up to 90% during wakefulness vs sleep and up to 100% during SD; human CSF tau increased over 50% during SD; in tau seeding and spreading model chronic SD increased tau pathology spreading; chemogenetically driven wakefulness in mice significantly increased ISF Aβ and tau.

To date, there is still not a 100 percent cure or remedy that stops or moderately slows down Alzheimer's and Dementia. However if wakefulness increases tau can accumulate faster than it gets cleared away, elevated levels, which are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, can form toxic clumps and spread throughout the brain accelerating neurodegeneration.

"It's important we carefully assess all new potential treatments, and this drug is now in an early phase clinical trial to establish if it is safe for people". The test is already commercially available; it detects NfL in cerebrospinal fluid for measurement of different neurological conditions, and Jucker is confident that future clinical trials for new Alzheimer's drugs will include the marker his team developed. "With individuals, we want people to know that the association really does a lot as far as education, support groups, health line and many other ways to help those in need".

An enzyme called gingipains, which the Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) bacteria gives off, is the "main cause of Alzheimer's disease", Dr. Steve Dominy, study author and associate professor at University of California, told Newsweek.

A drug developed by the company, COR38, is now in human trials.
