Denver Broncos hire Rich Scangarello to coach offense

Scangarello (pronounced: SKANE-guh-rel-OH) spent the previous two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers, who had four different quarterbacks start at least six games each during that time.

He was named head coach of the Houston Texans in 2006 and coached the team to its first-ever winning season in 2009, followed by their first-ever playoff appearances with back-to-back AFC South titles in 2011 and 2012.

Scangarello would seem a good fit for an offense that general manager John Elway declared needs to modernize to keep up with teams around the National Football League who are all-in on the run-pass option, among other innovations.

Scangarello had autonomy coaching up the quarterbacks.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported in December that Scangarello's name was emerging among NFL circles as a potential offensive coordinator candidate. Inside linebackers coach Glenn Pires and assistant defensive backs coach Roy Anderson will also not be retained, according to multiple reports. He already spends the early part of practices with that group, working alongside LaFleur and special offensive.

Still on the hunt for a head coach, the Bengals had reportedly been denied an interview by the Broncos with Kubiak.

The Broncos are filing out their coaching staff. Hafley left the 49ers to serve as co-defensive coordinator under new Ohio State coach Ryan Day.

New Broncos coach Vic Fangio isn't just bringing his defensive philosophies from Chicago.

Defensive line coach Jay Rodgers is the only defensive position coach still in place.

"When he recently became available, we acted aggressively to add him to our staff because his philosophy, and the style of play he coaches, fits our scheme and personnel very well", Shanahan said. He added that he's seen Keenum at his best - when he was leading the Vikings to the NFC championship a year ago - so, "I know what he's capable of and we're going to try to get that out of him". Arik Armstead, who is set to enter his fifth season, had a solid season in the run game but did not offer much as a pass-rusher.
