Freddie Kitchens has 'good chance' of being next Browns coach

Kitchens was promoted to offensive coordinator during the 2018 season following the firings of head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Despite only having eight games of coordinator experience under his belt, Kitchens has been around the National Football League for a long time.

With Kitchens running the offense, Baker Mayfield became a star, and the offense put up big numbers in winning five of the final eight games, and almost beat the eventual AFC North Champion Ravens on the road in week 17. They saw the single largest change in offensive DVOA from Week 9 through the end of the season, indicating that Kitchens, Mayfield, Chubb, and company really took off over the second half of the year. The interim offensive coordinator took a deadbeat Browns offense and brought it back to life and helped rookie Baker Mayfield on his way to setting the rookie record for touchdown passes in a season; an excellent hire and what we hope will be just the beginning of an extraordinary tandem for years to come.

There is also no good guess at who could serve as special teams coordinator under Kitchens either.

All that said, this was not a clear-cut choice as it may have seemed. The Browns even asked Stefanski who he would include on his coaching staff, should he get the job, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. McCarthy has obvious ties to the Cleveland front office, most-notably general manager John Dorsey, vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith and assistant general manager Eliot Wolf. Kitchens may be inexperienced but the connection he has with this offensive unit featuring a rookie at two critical positions can not be overstated.

Names such as Gregg Williams and, as previously mentioned, Zampese have already been dismissed from the team, and as the Kitchens era has begun, many fans patiently wait to see what his first move will be as the head coach in Cleveland. "I heard the other day somebody say something about I wasn't ready to be a head coach".
