Syrian media reported that its air defenses had opened fire on enemy targets launching a strike from Lebanese airspace.

"Missiles fired from Israeli planes targeted. arms depots southwest and south of Damascus that belong to Hezbollah or Iranian forces", said Rami Abdel Rahman.

Lebanon's National News Agency reported that Israel Air Force planes were operating over southern Lebanon.

"The aggression originated from above the Lebanese territories and a number of hostile targets were downed", Syrian TV said.

"Our air defences confronted hostile missiles launched by Israeli war planes from above the Lebanese territories and downed majority before reaching their targets", the military source said.

"Our air defences have intercepted a number of hostile targets near Damascus", Syrian state TV said.

An arms depot was hit and three soldiers were injured due to the attack, official news agency SANA reported, citing a military source.

Almost an hour after the attacks began, Damascus residents could still hear the air defence units firing toward targets in the air.

The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson has confirmed that the country's air missile defense system went into operation last night against an anti-aircraft missile fired towards Israel from Syria.

However, Israeli military did not confirm any air raids had taken place, instead saying that the county's response was a defensive maneuver.

Israel's air force has struck scores of targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in the war.

Tuesday's attack is the first since a missile assault on the southern outskirts of Damascus on November 29.

Russian Federation blamed the Israeli military for that incident - a charge rejected by Jerusalem - and has supplied Syria with the advanced S-300 air defense system.
