Why Kirk Herbstreit thinks Urban Meyer won't coach again

He then revealed later in the season that he has been dealing with an arachnoid cyst in his brain for 20 years, causing severe headaches and necessitating brain surgery in 2014. His last game will be in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. But he didn't blame only his health for stepping away.

OSU said the lack of charges led Meyer and the school's athletic director, Gene Smith, to believe they were not required to report the situation or take disciplinary action. He also says he is not sure he is able to coach at the intense, demanding level he has used for more than 30 years. I think his ego took such a hit and his arrogance is so vast that he made the decision to leave right after the suspension.

He says stepping away would have been more hard if the program wasn't healthy.

"Playing for Coach Meyer has always been a dream of mine that I always wanted to fulfill".

At the press conference, Ohio State says Meyer will formally announce his retirement from coaching and will introduce Ryan Day, who will be named as the 25th head coach in the history of the program, beginning on January 2.

The university will announce his retirement at a 2 p.m. ET news conference. But on the day Urban Meyer supposedly retired, the first thought that crossed everybody's mind was, "Yeah, right". The investigation showed he tolerated bad behavior for years from Smith, including domestic-violence accusations, drug addiction, lies and other acts that directly clash with the values Meyer touts publicly. As a result, Penn State probably won't miss seeing Meyer on the sideline.

Meyer was asked if the suspension will affect his legacy.

"I'm sure it will". "I am grateful to Buckeye Nation, the students, faculty, our administration and, most importantly, our student-athletes for their support and respect for this program during this time".

No active head coach can come close to Meyer's winning percentage. Meyer said his decision had to come before the December 19 signing day.

Former safety Tyvis Powell tweeted that it "was truly an honor to play for not only the best coach in America, but a great mentor as well".

"Besides my parents, you were one of the most influential people to touch my life and I'm appreciative of that", former Buckeyes linebacker Joshua Perry wrote on Twitter.

Meyer has a career record of 186-32 in 17 seasons, including stops at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. He has never lost more than two games in any one season with the Buckeyes.

Still, this does introduce an element of uncertainty to Ohio State's path at a time when MI looks as if it's found its footing under Jim Harbaugh.

Meyer led the Gators to national championships in 2006 and 2008 and went 13-1 three times at UF (also in 2009). "[Brian] Kelly, Coach Meyer, everybody has been eyeballing him since he was a young graduate assistant".

Ohio State finished the season at No. 6. If Florida State is mired in mediocrity for the next two years, they could pull the plug and chase Meyer to see if he'd be interested in returning to the Sunshine State.

At 54 years old, Meyer has established himself as one of the best college football coaches of all time.

In April, Ohio State announced Meyer had signed a two-year contract extension that would keep him at the helm through 2022.

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer is retiring.
