Qualcomm's new sensor uses ultrasonic technology to solve these problems and make the whole unlocking process more secure. And in that device will be Qualcomm's newest processor, what the company just announced as the Snapdragon 855.

Mobile device makers and 5G pundits have another challenge to overcome if they wish to encourage the early adoption of 5G-ready devices: the price point.

He continued, "This time next year, we'll be talking about the awesome services, devices, and experiences powered by 5G". When it came to build the first round of 5G smartphones for the United States, Verizon and AT&T leaned on Samsung, probably because of the company's strong background in 5G research and its long business relationships with both carriers. We'll have to wait and see, but Qualcomm has said that a "major partner" will be using this sensor in their device.

EE is planning to launch 5G in 2019 in 16 different United Kingdom cities, so coverage will be limited to certain areas at first.

A Super Snapdragon? That's what Qualcomm unveiled with the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform during Day 1 of its Snapdragon Summit being held in Maui this week. Qualcomm employees from nearly every division - Engineering, R&D, Standards, Hardware - contributed to developing the technologies that make 5G possible.

The new Snapdragon 855 also comes with the Qualcomm's fourth-generation, multi-core AI Engine, with the company claiming with up to 3 times the AI performance compared to the previous version.

The Cupertino giant is delaying its adoption of the next-generation network technology to avoid problems, like spotty coverage, that could arise during the initial phase of deployment of 5G networks. While this fingerprint sensor is technically separate from the chipset, Qualcomm does say that it is not dependent on the Snapdragon 855, but it won't be used with other chipsets, seeing as it is all part of one package from Qualcomm. When fully implemented, it will offer capacity and download speeds much faster than a 4G LTE network.

The chipset will be available for OEMs from the next few weeks, and Qualcomm has confirmed that companies like Samsung, LG, Sony, Xiaomi, Google, Sony, and OnePlus will launch smartphones based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 in the Q1 or Q2 of 2019.

Qualcomm did not delve into details about the upgrades 855 brings over 845. A Bloomberg report this week said that Apple will hold off on launching an iPhone on the ultra-fast 5G network until 2020 at the earliest.

There are two variants of the Snapdragon 855 processor: One with 5G support, and one without.
