Trump's Ex-Lawyer to Plead Guilty to New Charge

Cohen's surprise court appearance marks the latest step in his evolution from trusted Trump consigliere - he said Thursday he had lied out of "loyalty" - to prime antagonist.

As part of this deal, Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress regarding a Trump Tower project in Moscow.

Trump's ex-lawyer Michael Cohen, made famous after the Stormy Daniels scandal, has pleaded guilty to eight federal charges stemming from campaign finance and tax crimes.

"Michael Cohen is lying and he's trying to get a reduced sentence for things that have nothing to do with me", the president said as he left the White House Thursday morning.

"He's a weak person".

On November 29, the Washington Post reported that Mueller was taking a close look at a series of nighttime phone conversations between Stone and Trump during the 2016 presidential race.

Mueller also said that Cohen discussed the project with Trump, identified as "individual 1", on more than the three occasions that Cohen claimed to the Senate committee.

He later said he was cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling and ties between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Cohen had been negotiating with Russian Federation during the campaign on Trump's behalf. Nonetheless, the investigation continues.

The charges against Cohen were brought by special counsel's office, which is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible coordination with Trump associates. His lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said that Cohen was a "proven liar" and that Trump's business organization had voluntarily given Mueller the same documents cited in the guilty plea "because there was nothing to hide".

Nadler, whose committee would have subpoena and investigative power come January, said even "dangling a pardon in front of Manafort, who is a witness in a serious investigation in which Trump is either a subject or a target, could be viewed as obstruction of justice".

"Because a long time ago he did me a favor", Trump responded.

The filing comes days after Trump submitted his written responses to Mueller's questions about his involvement with Russian Federation as a presidential candidate.

Warner's committee was one of the two to which Cohen gave statements that his guilty plea now admits were lies.

Per the criminal information, Trump's former attorney lied about the Moscow project to "minimize links between the Moscow Project and Individual 1", who is identifiable from the document as Trump. Cohen used to describe himself as Trump's pit bull and delighted in jousting with the celebrity businessman's enemies, once asserting that he would "take a bullet" for his longtime boss. "Michael Cohen is a liar", said Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

Trump was emphatic that Cohen was "lying", but it is unclear what he believes Cohen is lying about. Cohen is scheduled to be sentenced December 12.

Trump has called it a witch hunt.
