Whitey Bulger found dead in West Virginia federal prison, NBC News reports

The Dept. of Justice says Bulger was found at 8:20 AM, and prison staff immediately attempted to resuscitate him. He had just recently arrived at Hazelton.

James "Whitey" Bulger, the longtime gangster who became an Federal Bureau of Investigation informant and later a most-wanted fugitive, was killed at the Penitentiary Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia on October 30, said officials.

The 89-year-old Irish-American gangster was only transferred one day earlier to the high-security prison in Hazelton, West Virginia, where officials initially reported an inmate was slain overnight.

He was previously relocated from a Florida prison to a facility in Oklahoma.

In addition to his role in murders, Bulger was also convicted for racketeering.

Though Bulger did manage to go 16 years without getting scooped up by law enforcement officials, he was eventually caught in 2011 outside of his apartment in Santa Monica, California. Bulger had also been housed at federal penitentiaries in Oklahoma and Tucson, Arizona. A prison source told TMZ that Bulger was attacked by three fellow prisoners on Tuesday morning. A character in the 2006 Martin Scorsese film "The Departed" was based on Bulger. But in his case, it was never clear who was informing to who.

Bulger was the head of the Winter Hill Gang, a violent South Boston crime ring, from the 1970 into the '90s.

Greig and Bulger started dating in the 1970s and lived together in Boston.

Prosecutors said that Greig had numerous opportunities to leave Bulger or report him, but she never did.

Most recently, he was portrayed by Johnny Depp in the 2015 movie Black Mass, which documented his life story as a gangster and longtime Federal Bureau of Investigation informant.
