Dating from 1914 and also known as Queen Mary's Tiara, Diana famously wore it during her visit to Washington with Prince Charles in 1985, although she used to complain that it was so heavy it gave her headaches.

Kate has worn the headpiece a number of times including at a diplomatic reception in 2016, and also at a state banquet for King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain when they visited Britain past year.

Meanwhile, Kate also wore Queen Alexandra's necklace for the first time at last night's state banquet.

Worn by the 36-year-old duchess a number of times previously, once in 2017 and on another occasion in 2016, the Cambridge "Lover's Knot" tiara has an extensive regal history, having capped the crowns of a long line of royals since 1818, including the beloved Princess Diana.

Since Queen Mary died in 1953 the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara has been handed down to Queen Elizabeth II who gifted it to Princess Diana when she Wednesday Prince Charles.

The Queen inherited the necklace following her mother's death in 2002, but has not been photographed wearing it.
