At present, storm Willa is heading north-northwestwards, however, the system will gradually recurve northwards on Monday and then north-northeastwards by Tuesday. Although it is expected to lose strength, it is still likely to be an extremely risky hurricane.

Forecasters predict it will make landfall between the resort towns of Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

The US National Hurricane Center said that Willa could "produce life-threatening storm surge, wind and rainfall over portions of southwestern and west-central Mexico beginning on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT)". Although the appearance has perhaps degraded somewhat since its peak Sunday night and early Monday morning, Willa still has a very well-defined eye surrounded by a ring of intense thunderstorms. But with evidence that an eyewall replacement cycle has begun, some fluctuations in intensity are possible. "After landfall, shear and the mountainous terrain of Mexico will cause rapid weakening and dissipation of the cyclone".

Hurricane Willa is nearing the Pacific coast of Mexico as a potentially catastrophic Category 5 storm, after experiencing what the National Hurricane Center called "explosive" strengthening over the past 48 hours.

In Atlantic Canada, most of the storm will be felt as high winds and heavy rainwith mild temperatures.

In what has become a hyperactive season in this area, Willa rapidly intensified in a zone where storms have historically gained considerable strength at this time of year.

The NHC said that the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter Aircraft that was en route to Willa experienced a safety issue before entering the storm and had to return to base.

In total there have been 13 hurricanes, but only ten of these have been categorised as major.
