It has been promised that a "seven-day free trial will be available for all Nintendo Account holders".

This Direct continues Nintendo's stream of new games/information recently, with Nintendo UK's Indie Highlights video, their Nintendo Switch Nindies Showcase Summer 2018, and a Direct focused on their upcoming mobile game, Dragalia Lost.

The online subscription service offers three payment levels: a $20 yearly cost, $7.99 for three months, and $3.99 per month.

'Nintendo: "The Switch has subscription-based online". While most people that would purchase these controllers are most likely to already be a member of the service, it is still an interesting decision on Nintendo's side.
