A Detroit church has swelled with gospel music for the funeral of Aretha Franklin, driving mourners to their feet to clap and sing ahead of tributes to the queen of soul by former USA president Bill Clinton and singer Stevie Wonder.

Mayor Mike Duggan announced at the service that he meant to have the city's riverfront Chene Park renamed in Franklin's honor.

The soul singer's granddaughter Victorie Franklin said: "You felt every emotion in every note and watching her on stage, I knew that performing was something I was born to do".

Bill Clinton on Aretha Franklin: "She lived with courage". Among the high profile guests were Whoopi Goldberg, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Ariana Grande, T.D. Jakes, Jennifer Holliday, boxer Tommy Hearns, Motown star Martha Reeves, Jesse Jackson Rep. Maxine Waters and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan were all spotted.

Robinson, the Motown great, remembered first hearing her play piano when he was just 8 and remaining close for the rest of her life, talking for hours at a time. "We really celebrate because we really recognize that those we call the dearly departed, they wouldn't want for us to cry and be sad and sorrowful". The "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" singer told local station WDIV that she and Franklin "had the same disease", but according to her rep, that's not the case. "She worked for us".

He led them in a prayer of thanks for Aretha and her minister father, asking that god make all in the church "better, not bitter, " by the time the day is over.

Ariana Grande celebrated Aretha Frankin's life and legacy on Friday (August 31) with a powerful tribute at the late singer's funeral service.

"Aretha was my baby", Robinson said.

Sabrina Owens, Franklin's niece, told the AP she started putting thoughts to paper about events earlier this year as her aunt's health failed.

"You know the other Sunday on my show, I misspelled 'respect, ' and a lot of y'all corrected me", Sharpton said in his speech, referring to how he used the name of Franklin's biggest hit to criticize Trump's feud with former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman.
