For low-light scenarios, this means that the signal from the four pixels is combined to raise the sensitivity to that of 1.6μm pixels, making for brighter and less noisy shots with an effective 12MP pixel count. This is largely thanks to the ultra-compact pixel size of just 0.8μm, the smallest in any image sensor to date. The increased pixel count enables high-definition imaging even on smartphones which use digital zoom.

In a blog post, the company went on: "These days, high-end smartphone models require even greater imaging quality from their cameras".

The unit measures just 8.0mm diagonally. Sony's 0.8-micron pixels are now the smallest on the market, however its use of a quad Bayer colour filter array helps each pixel coordinate with those that surround it to essentially create a larger pixel.

Add all of this together with a dynamic range that's four times greater "than conventional products", and it sure does sound like Sony's got a victor on its hands. During low light shooting, the signals from the four adjacent pixels are added, raising the sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of 1.6-micron pixels (12 megapixels), resulting in bright, low noise images and videos. Its newly unveiled IMX586 sensor is about to take things one step further, boasting a staggering 48MP resolution, which Sony claims to be the highest in the industry. The efficacy of Sony's new sensor will depend in large part on the devices it lives in.

It is also capable of recording full frame at 30 frames per second and can also record 4K videos (4096×2160) at 90 frames per second.

Sony will start shipping samples of the IMX586 camera sensor in September 2018, which means that the first smartphones sporting this sensor are expected to ship in early 2019.
