Scandal-plagued EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt resigns

Scott Pruitt resigned as head of EPA on Thursday following a very long string of ethics scandals and anti-science decisions.

"I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency", Trump announced on Twitter.

Senator Bernie Sanders, Democrat from Vermont: "Scott Pruitt was the worst EPA administrator in the history of the agency".

In a tweet, President Donald Trump said that Andrew Wheeler, the deputy administrator, will serve as its acting chief.

"I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda", the president tweeted. "I believe you are serving as President today because of God's providence", Pruitt wrote.

But despite the consistent praise, Trump finally decided by Thursday morning that Pruitt's behavior was too much of a political burden for him to bear.

Wednesday night, Pruitt was on the White House lawn, watching fireworks explode over the Washington sky.

Pruitt's resignation came amid a series of controversies over spending, ethics and management, including questions raised over first-class travel, a discounted condo rental, a soundproof phone booth installed in his office, among other things.

In his resignation letter, posted by Fox News, the former Oklahoma attorney general thanked President Trump for his courage and commitment to "historical regulatory reform".

Pruitt is the subject of 14 separate federal probes into his alleged misconduct and misspending. Pruitt was previously attorney general of Oklahoma, where he was close to the state's oil industry and waged a campaign against the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to slow climate change. Like Pruitt, Wheeler is a conservative who will seek to roll back what some see as excessive air and water regulation.

Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, of NY, said it's "time for new leadership at the EPA" after the resignation.

Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, who chairs the Senate environment panel, said that during Pruitt's tenure, the EPA "has rolled back punishing regulations that were hurting American workers and stifling our economy". He spent about nine years working for the company, where-according to his LinkedIn profile-he helped "lead the firm's practice by advising numerous types of clients on comprehensive legislative, regulatory and operational strategies to best prepare for a carbon-constrained future".

His job had been in jeopardy since it emerged he had leased a property past year that was co-owned by the wife of a veteran fossil fuels lobbyist, whose firm had sought regulatory rollbacks from the EPA.

During his time as a congressional staffer, Wheeler worked as a senior aide to Republican Sen.

"Pruitt abused power in a disgraceful way by using the job for perks and trying to enrich himself and his family", Hurlbut told GTM.

Pruitt's survival came from being in the line of eyesight - angling to hang around the West Wing while lavishing Trump with praise, telling the president he was "brilliant" and a political revolutionary, according to people who have attended meetings with him.
