The summit provides "an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity" to North Korea, Pompeo told a news conference on the summit's eve.

Sung Kim, who served as USA ambassador to South Korea and chief nuclear negotiator, led the US delegation, and met DPRK Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui. It's a reflection of the intense global curiosity over Kim's sudden turn to diplomacy in recent months after a slew of North Korean nuclear and missile tests past year raised serious fears of war.

Outside the Istana, the presidential palace where Trump was due to meet Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, well-wishers displayed American flags and a boy held up a sign reading: "I love President Trump!". They also believe that this latest summit is aimed at getting relaxation from the economic sanctions that have squeezed the impoverished country.

After a flurry of contacts between the two Koreas, South Korean officials suggested to Trump in March that Kim would be willing to meet face-to-face.

When Trump and Kim meet on Tuesday at Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches, they will be making history. Moon later proposed a tri-lateral meeting to put a formal end to the Korean war after the summit. But he also made clear Kim has a "one-time shot".
