Yoel Romero Misses Weight And Won’t Fight For Championship At UFC225

Romero was supposed to fight Luke Rockhold for the interim middleweight title at UFC 221.

Robert Whittaker will have to wait to defend his middleweight title after his bout against Yoel Romero was axed to a non-title fight after the challenger failed to make the weight.

Romero originally weighed in at 186 pounds and had two hours to cut to make championship weight.

Yoel Romero has missed weight for a title fight again.

"We came here to fight for the title", Romero said after the ceremonial weigh-ins, where he received a chorus of boos from the local crowd "I came here for the title fight".

Whittaker said his family helped him get through the rough 11 months. Soldier of God ultimately won that bout via third-round knockout.

"I can't disrespect him in that regard even for a second and look past him otherwise I'll lose in that instant".

"This fight, as far as I'm concerned, I have 25 minutes to try to finish him - and I'm going to use every single second of those minutes to try to achieve that".

According to Okamoto, the UFC is now working with Romero and Whittaker's camps to try to keep the main event together. At time of this writing, no official decision has been made as to whether the fight will still take place. "Why would I? I might as well fight someone heavier than me".
