Belgium Release Official 23-Man Squad For The World Cup

Kompany has had a series of injuries over the past five seasons, although he was able play without problems for Premier League champions Manchester City from January until the end of the campaign.

Manchester City club captain Vincent Kompany will be flying to Russian Federation for the World Cup this summer, having been selected in Roberto Martinez's final squad, despite sustaining an injury in their most recent friendly.

Kompany made his 77th appearance for Belgium against Portugal.

The final 23-man squads for the 2018 World Cup are being announced on June (deadline is 11 a.m. ET) and there have been plenty of surprises so far.

Kompany has been included but his participation in the tournament is still in doubt, with Martinez confirming he will wait until the last possible moment before deciding whether or not to replace the 32-year-old with Laurent Ciman, who is on standby.

"You could feel that when he came off we were all very much anxious", coach Roberto Martinez told a news conference, adding that it would probably take 48 hours to determine how serious the injury was.

"Vincent Kompany is a true leader". It's essential for us to give him every opportunity.

While the Parkhead defender was able to survive the cut, Watford's Christian Kabasele, Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels, Lazio's Jordan Lukaku and Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke were not so fortunate.

But the Manchester City captain has been named by manager Roberto Martinez in the 24-man list and could face England in the final Group G game on June 28. "We have two number 9's and Batshuayi and Romelu Lukaku have taken those positions".
