Four Russian Soldiers Killed In Syria

The Russian military has been present in Syria supporting Bashar al-Assad at least since 2015 and about 3,000 soldiers are believed to be on the ground.

At least 26 Syrian regime forces and nine Russian fighters were killed in an Islamic State group attack earlier this week in Syria's eastern desert, a monitor said Sunday.

A war monitoring group however, has put the death toll of Russian forces at nine.

"Some of those Russian nationals were government troops, but not all of them", Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

The pro-Syrian-government force also included Russian-made tanks and armoured vehicles.

Russian Federation has conducted a bombing campaign in Syria since September 2015, helping reverse the course of the nation's seven-year civil war in Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's favor.

Several groups of militants attacked the Syrian army's artillery battery in the province of Deir al-Zour at night, killing two Russian military advisers on the spot and wounding another five soldiers, the ministry said. "The military doctors had been fighting for the life of two wounded servicemen, but they did not manage to save them", the ministry said. 5 other Russians were wounded and 2 expired later due to their injuries.

The defense Ministry reported that the fighting lasted about an hour, the result was eliminated 43 militants.

More than 350,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since the civil war began in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

Russian Federation has been a staunch backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It also said that not all of the slain Russian fighters were government troops.

A statement circulated on the Telegram messaging app by accounts affiliated with the IS said the attack occurred overnight Wednesday near the town of Mayadeen, and that it had killed 15 men fighting on behalf of the Syrian government, including an unspecified number of Russians.
