It was the first finale for the "American Idol" show since ABC revived the former Fox franchise.

Not only did America crown a new American Idol victor on Monday night's finale of the hit competition series, but fans also were shocked to learn that victor Maddie Poppe and runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson had been secretly dating. The excitement was definitely in the air on Monday night's finale. Musician and singer Gary Clark Jr. took the stage with Cade Foehner and Dennis Lorenzo and grooved to "Bright Lights" before the live audience.

American Idol made its triumphant return to primetime earlier this year with an ABC revival that put some new twists on an old favorite.

They then performed "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

Just prior to the announcement of Maddie Poppe's victory, runner-up Caleb Hutchison revealed that the two are dating.

It was the moment everyone was waiting for.

"Who cares about American Idol now because Gabby should have won", one user wrote.

The victor of American Idol is... She mentioned how her life has changed since American Idol came into her life.

She got a tad choked up as she sang her coronation song, "Going Going Gone".

During an October interview on Good Morning America, the judges opened up about working on the American Idol revivial, and discussed what they were planning to look for on their journey to find undiscovered talent.

Poppe and Hutchinson announced on the program that they're dating, surprising judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
