Ford to release speedy 50th anniversary edition of Mustang Cobra Jet

Ford Performance says the 2018 Cobra Jet will run mid-8s at the strip, crossing the finish topping an astonishing 240km/h.

Ford Performance has announced the new 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet drag strip race auto is coming this summer as "the most powerful and quickest version from the factory ever".

Cobra Jet Mustangs are what legends are made of and it was fifty years ago, the original factory muscle took to the staging lanes at dragstrips everywhere, and along with the resulting wins, an automotive icon was born. The idea was simple: Ford has seen the coupe build instant popularity among those who value straight-line speed above all else, and decided its own in-house team could do just as well as third-party tuners. It was expected to be able to run the quarter-mile somewhere in the mid-8-second range and should top 150 miles per hour in the process.

The key competitors for the 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet are the Chevrolet COPO Camaro and the Dodge Challenger Drag Pak.

That power will be generated by a supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8 tuned for performance. It can also top 240 km/h (150 mph).

Ford also revealed, as well as the engine, that the auto will feature a "unique four-link rear suspension, along with a Ford 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering, an NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, and a drag race-specific coil-over suspension with specially designed Weld Racing wheels". Finally, there's a drag race-specific coil-over suspension with specially designed Weld Racing wheels with 50th anniversary badging. Don't get any ideas about making it a daily driver, however.

The auto is created to be legal for National Hot Rod Association drag racing, along with several National Mustang Racers Association and National Muscle vehicle Association classes. There is no word on price yet-ordering information and a full list of specifications will be released this summer.

FORD Performance Parts has teased a "roid popping tribute to the original Cobra Jet dragster, which it says will be 'the quickest straight-line Stallion yet".
