Yankees-Red Sox rivalry reignites with early season brawl

The Yankees and Sox erupted into a benches-clearing brawl in the top of the seventh inning after Boston reliever Joe Kelly drilled New York's DH Tyler Austin in the back with a 97 miles per hour fastball.

Austin slammed his bat down and charged the mound, sparking a fury of punches and pushes from both sides of the field. Kelly waved Austin at him, and things quickly got out of hand.

"It made me wonder, too, if they were in their clubhouse watching the Padre-Rockie brawl and planted the seed for them and led them to think that that's why they should do", Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.

Trying to hit Kelly, Austin instead tagged Red Sox third base coach Carlos Febles.

He did, however, get a sense of how angry Austin became. He'll undergo further evaluations, per Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston.

But that's not enough to restore the enormous amount of fun that once lived inside this bitter baseball rivalry.

The three-game series concludes Thursday - a 7:10 p.m. series finale featuring Rick Porcello and Sonny Gray. He gave up four runs on three hits with two walks in the shortest start of his career.

Vazquez believes the Yankees will retaliate at some point.

"You catch the tail end of something", Nevin said, "[the umpires] get the second guy sometimes". "They feel like us". There will be something soon. This is great for Boston, this is great for NY and this is great for the sport.

A disputed "dirty slide" from Austin that saw his left foot rise a little too high for Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt's liking would cause enough of an uproar to clear the benches.

If he's wrong, and Holt is plunked, don't expect another round.

I was ready to defend myself. "I'm not going to turn a double play on that especially with Wade running, so I think he was just going in hard, but he went in hard a little late with his spikes up". Holt took issue with the contact and they exchanged words before being separated.
