The issue of the daring escape of an arrested Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant from a Srinagar hospital was raised in the Rajya Sabha today, with the Congress saying the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has worsened. "Naveed himself snatched the weapon of one of the policeman and opened fire". Talking to media, SSP Srinagar Imtiaz Ismail Parray said that six detainees were being brought from Central Jail. Piecing together eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage to ascertain what had happened on Tuesday, police said two militants were lying in wait in the parking lot of the Out Patient Department hospital for the prison vehicle, carrying Jhatt and five others for treatment. Searches are going in the area and launched a manhunt for the detente and gunmen, the sources said. Doctors of the hospital told that Mustaq Ahmad killed on the spot, critically injured Babar died during an emergency surgery.

Security agencies are investigating reports that the Lashker commander was helped by accomplices who were already positioned inside the hospital before the police party brought him from Rainawari Central Jail.

The two slain policemen were identified as head constable Mushtaq Ahmed and constable Babar Ahmed Khan.

Pakistan prisoner Abu Hanzulla alias Naveed Jutt fled with the assailants was arrested a few months ago in Shopian.

He said they had inputs of Pakistani prisoners "planning attacks and conspiracy" from the jail and that is why police proposed segregating the Pakistani prisoners and moving them to the Jammu jail where they could be "controlled better".

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing of the two policemen. "Naveed alongwith five other prisoners was taken to SMHS hospital for the medical check-up yesterday", they said. Also, one of the top terrorists undergoing life imprisonment, is often visited by people who consider him a "godman" and receive "taveez" (amulets) from him, sources said.
