Patriots lose McDaniels to Colts

The Indianapolis Colts officially announced the hiring of Josh McDaniels as head coach, the first step in the franchise's quest to return to relevancy and regain its status as a championship-caliber team.

The Detroit Lions naming New England defensive coordinator Matt Patricia their head coach on Monday left the Indianapolis Colts as the only team with a head coaching vacancy. A press conference to formally introduce McDaniels as Chuck Pagano's replacement is scheduled for Wednesday.

For weeks now, McDaniels has been mentioned in conjunction with the Colts head coach opening, nearly immediately after Chuck Pagano was relieved from the role after six years on the sidelines for Jim Irsay's team.

It is McDaniels' second stint as a head coach.

The team did not reveal financial details surrounding the McDaniels' deal. He was sacked by the Denver Broncos after going 11-17 during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. He's won five Super Bowls with the Patriots, with the last two being as their offensive coordinator. Lewis is the ideal example of a player who found a way to thrive after seemingly everyone had given up on them; players like that are a specialty of both Ballard (who brought in 2017 Colts sack leaders Jabaal Sheard and John Simon) and McDaniels (who turned college lacrosse star Chris Hogan into an National Football League wideout). Don't forget, Andrew Luck is a quarterback who likes to throw the ball deep down the field.

For Patriots fans this is much of the same, a close heart attacks Super Bowl against an opponent that forces QB Tom Brady to attempt another hall of fame worthy comeback.

He said, "I'm not going to talk about that tonight".

The other top candidate was Patriots wide receivers coach Chad O'Shea, who now is "in play" to become New England's next offensive coordinator with Schuplinski's expected departure, according to Schefter. Patricia has been in the running for the post for several weeks but the move could not be made official until after the Patriots' Super Bowl defeat.
