That said, the real reason behind the move probably has something to do with the fact that Google is banning apps that put ads on your lock screen from the Play Store.

Amazon confirmed to Business Insider that future models on Amazon's Exclusive Phone program won't come with the Amazon ad lock screens, and they'll still sell at a similar level of discount to the phones now available on the program.

Before, when you woke up your Prime Exclusive phone, you saw some type of ad from Amazon much like with the Kindle. The retailer states that the change is meant to make the user experience better, by letting owners use the increasingly more prevalent fingerprint readers and unlocking features that bypass the lock screen.

A Wednesday update will disable the ads, which Amazon says "allows you to personalize your Prime Exclusive Phone's lockscreen and to more easily use your phone's unlock technologies, such as facial recognition and fingerprint sensors".

But hey, no ads on the lock screen.

Starting tomorrow, Amazon is evolving the program so that there will no longer be lockscreen offers and ads as an option. Pre-installed inside a Prime Exclusive Phone is Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Photos, and the Amazon Widget. These handsets are (as the name implies) only available to Amazon Prime subscribers, and they are offered at a discount compared to the normal pricing.

Today, the Prime Exclusive Phone program gets even better. The obvious solution would be to make an Amazon lock-screen app with ads and pre-load that on Prime devices. The program has since expanded to include phones from LG and Nokia, and there are now seven phones available via the program on Amazon's website. For now, this step seems like a band-aid, and Amazon will need a more permanent solution in the future.
