Everton manager Sam Allardyce has been looking for defensive reinforcements this month and will no doubt be pleased by the arrival of Mangala as he looks to bring balance to a lop-sided and ageing squad.

Eliaquim Mangala has only made 10 starts this season.

A loan for Mangala is considered ideal with the centre-back also able to operate at left-back if required, with the Blues lacking options in that department. Ramiro Funes Mori has returned to training following a serious knee injury.

Allardyce will surely be looking to make changes in his defence moving forward, with veterans Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams needing to be replaced in the near future.

The 26-year-old defender's current contract expires at the end of the 2018-19 season and he's on £65,000/week wages, which is not bad.

Mangala was the subject of a huge transfer fee from Porto to City back in 2014, to the tune of £32 million, though reports later clarified that the sum was closer to £42 million.

Injuries to both John Stones and Vincent Kompany late previous year saw Mangala earn a surprise recall to starting duties for City, though his clumsiness and occasional lapses in concentration quickly led fans of the Citizens to plead with the club to reinforce the heart of their defence this month.

He has been linked with Napoli but is not keen on moving to Serie A. Lazio had also expressed an interest in the Holland global last week.
