Will Trump Sell Out His Base for a Border Wall Fantasy?

President Donald Trump urged Congress on Tuesday to reach a compromise on the fate of millions of undocumented migrants who came to the U.S. as children, but did not give ground to Democrats over his plans for a border wall. Trump announced plans to repeal DACA a year ago and challenged Congress to craft a legislative reform package.

"The Democrats have been told, and fully understand, that there can be no DACA without the desperately needed WALL at the Southern Border and an END to the terrible Chain Migration & ridiculous Lottery System of Immigration etc", Trump tweeted in December.

"Yes, it has to be", Trump said when asked on whether funding for his border wall would have to be part of any agreement.

According to reports, Donald Trump is set to meet with developers to begin looking at different prototype concepts for his border wall following his upcoming State of the Union address.

A key Senate Republican, Texas Senator John Cornyn, said, "I do want us to get to a solution".

But Republicans claim Democrats won't back a long-term spending plan until Congress agrees to shield hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants from deportation. "So I think the Democrats have more to lose politically if they draw too hard of a line".

Representatives and senators attending the meeting with the White House are faced with tough negotiations.

"If you don't have the wall, you don't have security", Trump told the lawmakers.

The president appeared to acknowledge the potential political pitfalls of pursuing a more permanent deal, telling the lawmakers, "I'll take all the heat you want".

The discussions on immigration were taking place in the aftermath of the president's public blow-up with former campaign and White House adviser Steve Bannon, one of the architects of Trump's calls for a border wall along the U.S. Southern border. During the closed-door portion of the meeting, they reached an agreement to negotiate legislation that accomplishes critically needed reforms in four high-priority areas: border security, chain migration, the visa lottery, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.

We're going to piss away money on a stupid vanity project for Donald Trump because he understands that if he doesn't build that wall, or at least act like he's trying to build it, his white nationalist, alt right base is going to turn on him, and they will not support a reelection bid in 2020 for Donald Trump, assuming that he hasn't been removed from office before then.

His concern is about efforts by Trump and some congressional lawmakers to include issues not related to immigrants brought into this country by their parents as children who were covered under the program Trump scuttled in September. "We're going to come up with DACA and then we'll start immediately on comprehensive- I think a lot of people would like to see that".
