A foreign tourist was killed and another seven were injured early Friday when their hot-air balloon crashed due to inclement weather in Egypt's southern city of Luxor.

The tourist who was killed is a USA national, though the nationalities of the other tourists injured are still unknown, Al-Ahram reported.

In 2016, Egypt temporarily halted balloon flights after 22 Chinese tourists suffered minor injuries in a crash landing.

Since then, balloon rides have been monitored by cameras and banned from flying above 2,000 meters.

This was exacerbated by the 2015 Russian plane crash, which killed all 224 passengers and crew on board, a lot of them Russian tourists.
