Five killed in Moscow as bus drives into pedestrian underpass

The incident happened near Slaviansky Boulevard metro station.

A bus in Moscow rolled down a pedestrian underpass on Monday, killing 5 people and injuring 15. All the victims of the accident were pedestrians, a police source said.

At least 15 others were injured.

It is not clear what caused the crash but Russian media said the driver had been detained after he lost control of the vehicle. It has a broken windscreen and smashed windows along the left-hand side, which scraped the barrier of the walkway.

Moscow police said passengers and pedestrians were among those killed in Monday's crash.

This video shows emergency services at the scene of the crash.

Investigators are now looking into whether the smash was down to driving error or a fault with the bus. Footage shows people scattering as the bus ran down wide steps before being brought to a halt by the tunnel's roof.

According to the source, there are two main reasons for the crash: either the bus or another vehicle cut it off or the brakes on the bus failed.

Monday was a working day in Russian Federation because Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January 7, according to Reuters.

While health officials said four people had died, interior ministry spokesman Col Yuri Titov said the accident had claimed five lives.
