NYC Port Authority explosion was attempted terror attack

Four people have been injured after a Bangladeshi man with a homemade bomb strapped to his body set off an explosion at a commuter hub during rush hour in NY.

On Oct. 31, eight people were killed and a dozen more injured after a truck plowed into pedestrians near the World Trade Center. Police spoke with Ullah's family in the borough's Flatlands section, CBS New York's Marcia Kramer reported.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the explosion an attempted terrorist attack.

The incident was the second in the fourth quarter of the year that New York City saw one individual conducted terror attack in the busiest areas of Manhattan. The weapon was based on a pipe bomb and was fixed to the suspect with zip ties and velcro, according to police.

"There are no known additional incidents or activities", he said, adding that police will be on high alert. A city official told New York Times that a surveillance camera recorded the explosion.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal has been closed.

Transit disruption: There are still disruptions on the Seventh and Eighth Avenue lines, as well as the shuttle between Grand Central Station and Times Square. "Everybody was scared and running and shouting".

It's led to delays along some of the subway lines that pass beneath the bus terminal. "A woman fell. No one even went to stop and help her because the panic was so scary".

Law enforcement officials say that the man had explosive devices strapped on when it exploded in New York City subway.

Police have a 27-year-old suspect identified as Akayed Ullah, in custody, Time reported.

On a typical weekday, about 220,000 passengers arrive or depart from the terminal on more than 7000 buses.

At the White House, spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters, "This attack underscores the need for Congress to work with the president on immigration reforms that enhance our national security and public safety".

The Port Authority is a transportation hub where buses and trains operate.
