Flynn: Guilty plea is in best interest of my family and country

The charges against Flynn were brought on by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations that Russian Federation may have had a hand in tampering with last year's presidential election.

This is a developing story - check back for updates. Flynn has confirmed that he is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his guilty plea for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and prosecutors indicated Flynn has already testified that Trump transition officials directed his contacts with Russians.

In the Security Council case, Flynn was told by "a very senior member" of the transition team to press Russian Federation to stall or block the vote, the court documents show. "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Trump begged Comey.

He was forced to resign in February after misleading the White House about meeting the Russian ambassador before Trump took office.

The sanctions were ordered in response to "aggressive harassment of USA officials and cyber operations aimed at the U.S. election", Obama said in a statement on December 29, 2016.

According to the reports, in a deal with prosecutors, Flynn offered testimony about conversations inside the Trump campaign about contacts with Russian operatives.

President Trump meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (l.) and Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergei Kislyak at the White House in Washington.

The Obama administration imposes sanctions on Russian Federation in retaliation for Russia's hacking of the Democratic National Committee in the summer and other efforts to interfere with the US election.

Flynn is at the center of a broader investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into the Russian meddling in the 2016 US Presidential election campaign.

Following his plea, Flynn left the court with his head down and released a statement agreeing to cooperate with the special counsel and said he accepted full responsibility of his actions.

Flynn, who pleaded guilty to the charge during a hearing in federal court in Washington, DC on Friday, rejected what he called "false accusations" that he is guilty of treason and other "outrageous acts", but said that he takes "full responsibility" for the actions he admitted to in court.

Flynn was forced to resign in February after intelligence leaks showed he had lied to Pence and other senior United States government officials about his conversations with Kislyak in late December, when Trump was still president-elect.

"He is prepared to testify, we are told by a confidant, against President Trump, against members of the Trump family and others in the White House", Ross said. His business dealings and foreign interactions have made him a central focus of Mueller's investigation.

In October, Paul Manafort, Trump's one-time campaign chairman, and Manafort's deputy Rick Gates were arrested on money laundering and tax-related charges in relation to their work for Moscow-backed Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych.

Former FBI director James Comey, whose firing by Trump led to the appointment of Mueller, sent out a tweet quoting a bible verse shortly after the news was announced.

Apparently, Mueller's team was seeking a deal of some kind to win Flynn's cooperation in that investigation.
