Schiano is now the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

USA Today Sports first reported Sunday afternoon that Tennessee was working to finalize a deal with Schiano.

Tennessee (4-8, 0-8 SEC) ended its season Saturday with a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt.

After firing Butch Jones earlier this season, the Tennessee Volunteers have been taking part in a national search for a replacement.

He had a brief stint as an National Football League head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was sacked just after two back-to-back losing seasons.

Schiano is now assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Ohio State. Schiano spent a little over a decade as the head coach of Rutgers University.

Volunteer faithful, I hope you enjoy a guy who went 68-67 at Rutgers!

Schiano, 51, is now the defensive coordinator at Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights made six bowl appearances under Schiano.

Currie reportedly targeted Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen before turning his attention to Schiano.

Schiano was hired by the Buccaneers following the 2011 season, but he was sacked after two seasons with an 11-21 record. At the time, Currie was at Kansas State managing the potential departure of Bill Snyder as head coach, which allowed him to treat almost every year like he was going through a coaching search.
