One of them is said to be in a serious condition.

At least three people have been hurt in a vehicle attack near Toulouse, Occitanie, in southern France said the French police on Friday, as reported by news agency AFP.

All three students hit by the vehicle were Chinese, while the driver told police he rammed them "deliberately", local media said.

The French news channel BFM reports the driver, who was immediately arrested, was known to authorities for previous crimes but was not on a list of known extremists.

The suspect tried to flee the scene but police stopped him. According to the police report, among the injured are Chinese students who are studying in the city.

The suspect, a single man who lives with his mother in Blagnac, had previously suffered severe psychiatric problems and was released from a court-ordered hospital stay in December 2016, the prosecutor said.

Couilleau said the driver claimed he acted deliberately and was arrested. A 23-year-old is more seriously injured, a young man and another girl, aged 22 and 23, have lighter injuries.

"We thought there was an accident because when we got off the campus there were a lot of police cars around".
