Netflix fires Kevin Spacey after sexual harassment allegations

The streaming company suspended production earlier this week of the upcoming sixth and final season of the political intrigue drama, in which Spacey plays United States president Frank Underwood.

A number of other alleged victims, including crew members on House of Cards, have since come forward with disturbing claims against the star, and production on the hit show was shut down before Spacey was sacked.

Embattled Kevin Spacey reportedly filed an application to develop a House Of Cards-themed merchandise line days before he was accused of sexual assault by actor Anthony Rapp.

The most recent filing was October 24, five days before actor Anthony Rapp alleged in a BuzzFeed News interview that Spacey made unwanted sexual advances toward him in 1986 when Spacey was 26 and Rapp was 14.

Spacey's publicist also cut ties with him this week, according to Reuters.

New accusations reported by CNN detail eight House of Cards employees' claims of sexual harrassment from Spacey, and one of those of sexual assault. It has been a tense situation for Netflix and Media Rights Capital, as they look at bringing a swift close to "House of Cards" to deal with the situation that has left them "deeply troubled".

Spacey has sought evaluation and treatment, his representatives said in a statement on Wednesday, without providing details on the nature of the treatment. He is accused of similar behaviour at London's Old Vic theatre where he was artistic director for more than a decade. MRC said someone complained about "a specific remark and gesture made by Kevin Spacey", but Spacey "willingly participated in a training process" and the issue was considered resolved.

MRC said in a statement, ABC7 reported: "While we continue the ongoing investigation into the serious allegations concerning Kevin Spacey's behavior on the set of 'House of Cards, ' he has been suspended, effective immediately".

Spacey's upcoming Gore Vidal biopic, Gore, which he was set to produce and star in, has also been scrapped by Netflix.
