That's probably the cut off of teams that could actually make the College Football Playoff, given no two-loss team has made it before. If the Bulls win their final three regular season games, including a Black Friday trip to UCF, they nearly certainly would face Memphis in the AAC title game. At the outset, the committee is honoring Notre Dame's schedule, Clemson's victories against Auburn and Virginia Tech and the Sooners' head-to-head victory against Ohio State.

Georgia and Alabama, Southeastern Conference rivals, are both 8-0 and have been dominating their competition.

What a concept: Georgia, not Alabama, is the first No.1 this year.

Georgia's players are confident they will handle the lofty status in the same manner Alabama has the last several seasons, but the Bulldogs do admit this is a very different world.

The final rankings will be released December 3 at noon. The Crimson Tide won the four-team playoff over Clemson after the 2015 season and were the runners-up last season.

Bravo, committee, bravo. The committee also put Oklahoma at No. 5 ahead of No. 6 Ohio State based on the Sooners' win at Columbus this year. Hocutt noted those three victories against teams in the committee's top 25, along with the close loss to Georgia as the reason for the Irish being the highest ranked in a group of one-loss teams from three to seven.

He also said that Alabama got credit for beating Florida State to start the season when the Seminoles had their starting quarterback Deondre Francois for most of the game.

There will always be a debate on whether or not the committee makes the right choice, but it really is hard to argue with the initial rankings.

The Tigers have already faced three teams in the Top 25, including No. 3 Clemson and No. 16 Mississippi State.

The semifinal winners will meet for the national championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on January 8.

Iowa State is one of four teams with two victories over teams rated in this week's CFP poll: No. 2 Georgia, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Clemson. Two unbeaten teams, Wisconsin and Miami, round out the top ten.

The first College Football Playoff rankings are out.

Its sole mandate is to pick the nation's four best teams, regardless of conference or geography, he said. The Bulldogs' highest ranking previously was No. 9 on November 25, 2014.

I can't say I knew MSU would be ranked because I'm obviously not on the committee, but I felt pretty good about it.
