India beat Malaysia 2-1, lift Asia Cup title

Dhaka: India beat first time finalists Malaysia 2-1 in a thrilling finale to win the Asia Cup Hockey tournament-2017 played at Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Sunday. Malaysia were looking for the all-important equaliser while India were keen to hold onto the 2-1 scoreline, which they did and was crowned Asia Cup 2017 champions.

Hockey players SV Sunil and Ramandeep Singh combined to give India the lead.

India continued to dominate the possession in the first quarter as Malaysia failed to produce any good opportunities.

The second quarter saw both the teams battle it out in the midfield as they looked to establish their authority in the match.

The game between Malaysia and North Korea was postponed following the murder of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, at klia2 on February 13.

China are the 15th team to qualify for the World Cup, joining hosts India, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Spain and France at the prestigious 16-nation event. The Malaysian goalkeeper also joined the attack in the dying moments but they could not break the Indian defence and had to be content with the runners-up trophy - their best ever finish in this continental competition.

India on the other hand, had opportunities of their own in the latter part of the third quarter but could not produce a third goal to seal the deal. But the Malaysians fought valiantly and their efforts bore fruit in the 50th minute when Shahril Saabah pulled one goal back.

India started the fourth quarter aggressively as Varun Kumar missed a chance to score when Gurjant Singh found him in the circle with a calculated pass in the 46th minute. "But I am really happy how they played, they changed the way we defend in the end and that helped us clinch the final".
