Islamists are reported to be plotting a strike against tourist beaches similar to the one in Sousse, Tunisia, in 2015, which left 38 people - including 30 Britons - dead.

Spain's increase is in stark contrast to the U.S. where President Trump's' administration has slowed illegal border crossings by more than 72 percent compared to 2016, according to a recent Washington Times article.

Spain may overtake Greece this year in numbers of migrants arriving clandestinely by sea, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.

More than 11,000 migrants arrived in Spain in the first half of this year, compared to over 13,000 in all of 2016.

Many of those opting for the longer route are from west African countries including Senegal, Gambia, Guinea and Ivory Coast.

He added that the boats crossing the choppy sea to Spain were much smaller than those launching from Libya to Italy.

'Whereas in Spain, the strategy is smaller craft hoping to come in undetected, and undoubtedly some do'.

The next day, about 700 other migrants from Africa tried unsuccessfully to storm the border crossing between Morocco and Ceuta, a tiny Spanish enclave on Africa's northwest tip.

Ceuta and Melilla have the EU's only land borders with Africa, and as a result, they are entry points for people desperate to get to Europe. It seems like it is safer to go through Morocco to Spain than through Libya.

Both the IOM and the Spanish Red Cross say Spain is well-equipped to manage the new influx despite complaints from some groups that the country's temporary accommodations for migrants already are filled to capacity.

"It is a problem for the European Union because the autonomous cities are the way to enter the continent".

The teenagers will be taken to migrant reception centres, where they can apply for asylum in Spain.
