Number of Britons granted German citizenship quadruples

Citing recent figures, Germany's Federal Statistical Office noted that 2,865 United Kingdom citizens gained German citizenship in 2016, an eye-opening 361-percent increase over 2015.

The number is predicted to be even greater next year because most people applied only after the referendum and applications usually take between six months and a year to process. "The link to Brexit seems clear", said Ostatistics.

As Britain prepares to leave the European Union, its citizens are rushing to retain ties to the bloc before the divorce is complete.

June. 13 (ANI): British Prime Minister Theresa May has been conveyed that if she insists on discussing a future trade relationship at the same time as Brexit, then the European Union will take a year to draft a new mandate for its chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, which will effectively kill the negotiations.

German authorities say the number of Britons granted German citizenship quadrupled previous year as Britain voted to leave the European Union, though they were still only a small fraction of newly naturalised Germans.

At 16,290, Turkish citizens remained the largest group seeking a Germany passport, although applications dropped by almost 17 percent.

Among nationals of Europe's biggest economies, only Italians - 3,597 of them - surpassed Britons in pursuing German citizenship, according to the latest statistics. Poles came in second at 6,632, a 11 percent increase compared to 2015.
