'Something strange' is going on with Trump's Twitter, experts say

A spokesman for Twitter, however, told BuzzFeed this was not true, and a comparison between Trump's current personal Twitter profile and an archived version of the page shows it has only increased by about 300,000 in the past few days. But the thing is that followers (either on Twitter or Instagram) can very easily be purchased, and spam 'bots are also a common problem, especially for popular figures.

Author John Niven pointed out Tuesday morning that Trump's Twitter account saw a weird spike in followers over the weekend - most of which were picture-less accounts that joined the site in May 2017 and have yet to post a single tweet. "The biggest celebrity accounts-Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga-seem to have millions of followers". Not only does he have considerably more followers than Trump - 89.3 million - just 20.7 percent (18,468,540) of those are judged by twitteraudit to be fake.

The president experienced an increase of 2.3 million followers in May, adding approximately 573,000 followers each week. Just over a year ago he had just 7.6 million followers, but only 8% were fake, according to FiveThirtyEight.

But are half Trump's Twitter followers really fake? The comedian Joe Mande now has a healthy 1.01 million followers, but his bio contains a caveat: "twitter is trash, facebook's the devil, i bought a million followers for like $400 none of this shit matters antarctica is melting". To compete in the narcissistic Twitter battle of "who's got the most fans", users can buy sketchy followers for as low as $6 per one thousand.

Anyone can amass an exorbitant number of Twitter followers. And numerous followers aren't following anybody except Trump.

But since the Dumpster is already the most powerful man in the world, we all know he doubled his following with bots because he's obsessed with vanity numbers - like his "landslide" election win. Others suggested that Trump's account was suddenly gaining as many as 100 followers a minute.

While an avid user of Twitter, Trump has never reached the number of followers that former President Barack Obama has. Some folks can live with that, like comedian Joe Mande, who owns up to that fact in his Twitter bio.
