Almirola's No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford smacked the already wrecked cars of Joey Logano and Danica Patrick with 68 laps remaining in the Go Bowling 400, bringing out a red flag.

Richard Petty Motorsports and Aric Almirola, who suffered a compression fracture to his T5 Vertebra after a multi-car accident at Kansas Speedway Saturday night, will host a media availability at Charlotte Motor Speedway to provide an update on his injury and his recovery plan.

Regan Smith was tabbed to drive the iconic No. 43 Smithfield Foods Ford for Almirola this weekend. In a frank and emotional interview, Almirola pulled no punches.

"The next thing I knew, I was on oil or water or something because my vehicle wouldn't slow down, it wouldn't steer", Almirola said.

"I didn't think I was that lucky, but after talking to all the doctors in Kansas and Charlotte I realize how lucky I was", he said. Not just any Cup vehicle, I get to be in the No. 43 Petty Cup auto. That's most important to me. I braced because I knew it was coming and as soon as I made impact with Joey's vehicle it felt like someone put a knife in my back.

"That's why I dropped the window net so fast and took the steering wheel off", he said. I braced because I knew it was coming and as soon as I made impact with Joey's auto it felt like someone put a knife in my back.

"I'm glad to be here, too". I feel like an idiot even being involved in the wreck. "When I threw it forward, I was in a lot of pain with my back already and that made it worse extending my hands out in front of me".

Aric Almirola will be sidelined for an extended period from injuries sustained in last week's accident at Kansas Speedway. Devin, a 5-year-old boy battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, had been scheduled by Pollex to walk down the event's signature runway with Almirola on Wednesday night. "I felt like somebody stuck a knife in my back". He also has six wins in the XFINITY Series.

With the timetable of return being eight to 12 weeks, Almirola will be unable to make the Playoffs in September. "For all relative circumstances, I guess things worked out the best they could". I can't really separate my shoulders and my hips. They had no idea was what wrong with me. "I've got a lot of baseball to play with my son and I'd like to dance with my daughter one day at her wedding, so I'm not gonna risk it".
