Indians Dominance Over Tigers Helped Win AL Central Title

A long rain delay during the Tigers' game against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday cost him the chance to qualify for the AL ERA title, which would have made him the first rookie to lead either league in ERA since 1976, when the Tigers' own Mark Fidrych led the AL with a 2.34 ERA in 250.1 innings.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris will likely have his scheduled start pushed back to Friday after Thursday night's matchup between the Tigers and Cleveland Indians was postponed due to rain. Even after losing two games with few of their everyday players in the lineup, the Indians have a 14-4 advantage in the season series.

Baltimore rallied against the Blue Jays for a victory, so the Tigers remain a game out of the second wild card spot.

Regardless of what team wins the final game on Thursday between the two teams, Cleveland will end its season with their best season series record against Detroit in over 16 seasons.

A makeup game would be played Monday only if it would affect which American League teams would make the postseason or how teams are seeded.

The postponement means that Thursday's starter, Ryan Merritt, will be pushed back to Friday.

Monday is the only scheduled day off before Tuesday's AL wild-card game.

The Indians entered the bottom of the fifth inning tied with the Tigers, but a Miguel Cabrera three-run home run gave his Tigers a 6-3 lead while the rain continued to fall.

Justin Verlander is slated to pitch Sunday. The tarp was put back on and even though little or no rain fell for the next two-plus hours the outfield was soaked and potentially unsafe. "I understand there, they wanted to get to that fifth". Detroit is also 5-2 in Norris' last seven starts with four days' rest, and 5-1 in Norris' last six starts versus the AL Central.

"We walked the field once and I think we all knew the situation", said Indians manager Terry Francona.

At about 2 p.m., the grounds crew removed the tarp and started preparing the infield.

The Indians aren't supposed to start the ALDS until October 6, so there will be time off even if they have to play Monday.

As a result of a clarification that became effective for this season, Major League Baseball requires all 162 games to be played if a game impacts seeding/home-field advantage for the Postseason.
