Gase said Wednesday that he anticipated that every healthy player would get playing time in the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday.

Now he has gone off the grid celebrity-wise, which isn't easy in football-crazed South Florida.

"It'd be nice if we had a little bit of a rhythm, get more than seven plays", Gase said today following practice.

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill will have several friends and family members cheering him on Friday when the Dolphins play in his home state of Texas. Months later, he's not even a projected top overall player on the positional depth chart. "It just didn't go the way any of us thought".

Also in the mix at the guard spots are veterans Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner, who struggled as starters previous year, and Jermon Bushrod, a converted left tackle. "We've got to make sure that whoever our five guys are, we're doing the right thing - playing physical and they can count on each other".

"This is a league where confidence does matter, " Gase said.

"Because he has to come out here and work, I've got to come out here and work", Thomas said. But the change to left guard has made this staff go slower with Tunsil.

Offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said this week he doesn't know who will start at the guards in the season opener September 11.

Tunsil, who is a Florida native, is getting the love from Miami fans that are very vocal about Gase giving him starter reps over Thomas. "I think that's what I've appreciated about him, is that he's not anxious about what anyone else says", he said, per the Palm Beach Post. This year the line could include four former first-round picks - Tunsil, center Mike Pouncey and tackles Branden Albert and Ja'Wuan James - which raises expectations the blocking might finally be better.

Gase said Doughty's next step is "controlling everybody", correcting mistakes and correcting mental errors by others. "We're still in that process".
